When the town of Plano was first established back in the 1840s, the early settlers contended between naming the town after President Millard Fillmore and the Spanish word for flat- “plano”. The name was in reference to the featureless terrain of the area. In those early days, the town was noted for its sawmill and gristle mills, and it wasn’t until the railway came to town that it became a major hub of business.

The large number of corporate headquarters in the city mean that Plano has the highest median income for any city in the United states with more than 250,000 residents. Outside of business, the biggest draw for visitors to Plano is likely the balloon festival. It is held every year and features dozens of different events. The festival can last all day long and well into the night. During the day, skydivers and hundreds of hot air balloons will entertain the crowds. At night, fireworks and glowing balloons will light up the sky and continue the fun late into the evening. Each year, as many as 90,000 attendees come to see the festival.
The Heritage Farmland Museum in Plano is another great reason to visit the town. It offers people a chance to see a preserved turn of the century Victorian farm that is rich in history and perfect for tourists. The museum is geared toward small children, with lots of camps, activities and events for them to get involved in.
Another historic location in Plano is the Southfork Ranch. It was here that the popular television show Dallas was filmed, and it draws in many fans of the show each year. The ranch offers tours and has a number of venues for special events. It serves as a convention center as well, hosting business meetings for some of the biggest companies in the world.
For those who like to enjoy themselves outdoors, Plano has tons to offer. The nature preserve provides over 800 acres of woodland, biking and hiking trails and protected animals to enjoy. The large city is also home to manty beautiful parks, several recreation centers and some of the oldest trees in the country.
As a suburb of Dallas, Plano is well developed and it enjoys a lot of the same transportation methods used in the major city. Highways, bus lines and the newly established DART train system allow residents to get around he city and visit other nearby locations with ease.
